LaLa Land is absolutely terrible. I just tried to watch it tonight, as I was at a loss for something new to watch. It was exactly as bad, in exactly the way I suspected it would be bad as I thought since it debuted. Which is why I haven't even tried to watch it until now. Good God it is awful.

"Aromantic" is a solid, arguable claim, but bleak, less so. It appears bleak in the sense that it subverts mainstream narrative expectation, in the "Happy Ending," but I find it to be quite affirming, even if sorrowful. "La La Land" is about reality and dreams, and (like the OP states) the tension therein.
